Bruno on the Tonight Show

June 25, 2009

It should be a fun night on the The Tonight Show on Thursday as Bruno makes an appearance.  Sasha Baron Cohen never disapoints when making a rare public interview. Cohen appeared as Borat on Letterman prior to that film opening. Stay tuned for full analysis.

Ed McMahon dies at 86, 1923-2009

June 23, 2009

Famed Tonight Show with Johnny Carson sidekick Ed McMahon died Tuesday reportedly from pneumonia. McMahon was Johnny Carson’s sidekick on The Tonight Show for almost 30 thirty years, but had teamed with Carson years before. McMahon lived one of the most extraordinary lives in broadcasting history. America lost a true legend.

Besides The Tonight Show, McMahon was famous for the talent show Star Search. You might also know McMahon’s face from Publishers Sweepstakes envelopes that would frequent your mailbox.

McMahon spent his career warming up audiences and serving as announcer for Johnny Carson. Millions went to bed each night with Carson and McMahon, both of whom loved their jobs. The New York Times obituary can be found here. McMahon’s catch phrase will live in TV history forever.  Each night, viewers were introduced to Carson by McMahon’s unmistakable “Heeeeeeres Johnny!” call.

Larry David on Tuesday’s Tonight Show

June 15, 2009

Larry David will be Conan O’Brien’s first guest on Tuesday night’s Tonight Show.  He is there to promote his new movie, Whatever Works, which was written and directed by fellow New York native Woody Allen.  The movie will be in selected cities this Friday, and lets hope that your city has been selected.

David does not make frequent appearance on late night talk shows. David appeared on Late Night with Conan twice (‘99 and ‘00), once as a satellite on Letterman to do a Top 10 List,  and once as a guest on Letterman (watch the interview here).

This is a can’t miss show.

Letterman Apologizes yet again

June 15, 2009

On Monday evening’s Late Show, David Letterman will again apologize to Governer Palin and her family for the jokes made last week.  The AP reports he will speak about the issue to open the desk portion of his show.  Letterman declares, “”The joke, really, in and of itself, can’t be defended,”

I disagree with Letterman’s decision to apologize to Palin.  Letterman had said several times he is only looking for cheap laughs and not to hurt anybody.  He is a comedian.  Comedians should not have to defend their material.  If you get offended by what a comedian says about you, then you need to address your own self esteem, since clearly it is not strong.

Letterman should have stayed strong on this issue.  Perhaps there were forces as CBS or someone close to Letterman who convinced him to do this, but it is disappointing.  It was a joke.  Palin’s overreaction should be the story here.  She seems like the unstable one.

Letterman responds to Palin

June 11, 2009

During David Letterman’s monologue Tuesday night, Letterman made a joke about Alex Rodriguez knocking up Sarah Palin’s daughter, who was in attendance at a Yankee’s game.  However this was not Palin’s 18 year old daughter Bristol, it was her 14 year old daughter.  Palin was not pleased calling Dave “pathetic.”  Dave joked that he might be kicked off the year, even though he signed a new deal.

Letterman addressed the issue last night, while still making jokes.  He said Palin looked like a “slutty-flight-attendant.”  You can see Dave’s comments and read more about this story at EW.

Letterman beats Conan

June 10, 2009

It took six episodes, but Letterman beat Conan in the ratings Tuesday Night.  Letterman’s guest was Julia Roberts.  Letterman closed the gap in viewers each day since Conan started last Monday.  This news comes on the heels of an announcement that Letterman will be staying with the network for at least three more years.

Letterman’s New Deal

June 10, 2009

David Letterman’s production company Worldwide Pants has struck a new deal with CBS to keep the king of late night on TV until the summer of 2012.  Letterman will be celebrating his thirtieth year on the lat night airwaves.  He has not yet indicated that he will step down at that time.  This is always good news for the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, a show that is also produced by Worldwide Pants.

On Monday’s Late Show, Howard Stern exclaimed his loyalty to David Letterman saying that he never liked Jay Leno and that Dave was the King of late night television.  Stern and Letterman both worked at NBC in the 1980’s.  See the full interview:
